Hi!
I'm another Tumblr convert, figure I should at least give this place a shot. My main fandoms are Tolkien and Homestuck, as well as Discworld stuff, and I mostly post headcanons, fanart, and fic-- my AO3 is Wanderbird. I'm also interested in RP, for like... a lot of different fandoms, and fandom meta stuff. I'll also be trying to subscribe to add anyone who adds me for a while, because I know literally nobody here.

Main fandoms: Anything Tolkien, Discworld, Homestuck, Lucifer, Valdemar, Marvel/Avengers, Torchwood, Good Omens, Welcome to Night Vale, and a bunch of relatively obscure stuff like Stand Still Stay Silent, Young Wizards, Order of the Stick, and El Goonish Shive.

Minor fandoms (and recent reading): Any superhero stuff, Snow Crash, Harry Potter, Problem Sleuth, Steven Universe, She-Ra (the reboot), Doctor Who, Warriors (y'know, the cats?), every Tamora Pierce book ever, Forever, Venom

Other interests: Fandom meta, fiction, nanowrimo, artificial intelligence, drawing tutorials, roleplay, etc

Wow, you and I are like fandom twins. I don't particularly post too much about fannish stuff but if you a. have a more or less liberal/progressive point of view and b. don't mind a lot of linkspams and occasional polls (when I have a paid account) we could absolutely be friends :)

lol, yeah, I can imagine after tumblr it's a steep learning curve.

I see people link this a lot to beginners, but you'll need to scroll down to "guides/advice" for starting out - that should really be first in this list, I think. There's a lot of info there, and I also have a guide to starting out myself here that I made to try and distill things a little better.

Those are some very informative guides! Also *wow* that's a lot of stuff. Thank you for the help :) Do people generally link their character accounts to their main account in some way? Also, is it generally one character/account per game or can you use the same character for multiple, like if one game stops being very active and another with a similar premise pops up?

Most people keep a muselist - where that muselist is posted is up to you, but you can certainly link it to your main journal! I personally have a roleplay-specific journal I use for that, and I've also seen people use a stickied post on their musebox for that.

As for the latter question, it's up to you! I think since the fall of journal games (where you had to subscribe to every journal of characters in the game) it's less common to make an extra account for multiple instances of a character. Most people just use the same journal in their multiple games. The only exception would be if you're using very different canon points, for example a skinny!Steve journal for pre-Captain America Steve Rogers, and another journal for a Civil War canon point.

Sure! Here is an example of a short thread with header post that i played out with a friend on my musebox. I may add that to my guide (I need to take out references to the game I was opening at the time, really, anyway. It's long closed, now.)

I use this template for my journals that makes it more of a portal page with links. You can see examples here:

Most people include some sort of info page on the character (whether it's one you make up just to post there, or the application to whatever game you're in), a HMD post - that's "how's my driving" and is a place to get feedback - and permissions. Additional posts are possible, such as a character inbox for your game, a CR (character relations) chart, and others.

The portal isn't difficult to code but is just a little bit of a pain to use. So i have only put it on my recently active journals.
