cross-posted; hope that's alright!
NAME: Ante (she/they)
AGE: 27
INTERESTS & HOBBIES: general interests: I am an educator (middle school world language - german) and, as such, am constantly reading research in pedagogy, education, language acquisition, equity, etc.. I love cats, dark chocolate, astronomy, avant-garde art of the early 20th century (modernism), literature, language learning/acquisition, linguistics, trains, thinking about memory/time... the usual. :-)
hobbies reading (my main interest is german lit and cultural studies, go figure, so I read a lot of nonfiction in that realm; I do also appreciate fictional literature as well), writing (mostly privately), taking photographs, dabbling in watercolor (just started last summer with zero training), playing with my cats and gerbil, taking walks/cycling/being in nature, cooking and baking (vegetarian and vegan). does riding public transit also count? I also like to travel, go to museums, be by myself but among society, etc. I also really like coffee (and tea, but I have more fun making coffee in various ways at home).
fan interests: my animanga taste stopped when I was in middle school; as such, there are few things I care more about (still) than Fullmetal Alchemist (both '03 and Brotherhood/manga) or Katekyo Hitman REBORN! (manga). though I'm not terribly into the anime scene in general, I will always be down to discuss these at any length.
I generally don't watch series (I have watched... four, I think, in the past decade), but lately have been very into Everything's Gonna Be Okay and The Good Place.
in the past two years, I've become someone who listens to podcasts a lot. this was surprising to me because I appreciate silence, but it also makes sense because I don't have a TV/online subscription/watch series in general and it's as close as I can get to reading while driving or cooking, haha. I love listening to things related to history, science, equity (racial justice, etc.).
I can't make music at all, but I love listening to music. my taste is generally indie, electronic instrumental, hip-hop/rap, and alternative from the 00s. I can name some favorites if you want.
also, I like films! I like drama, historical action, classic/silent cinema, horror, some sci-fi... a little bit of everything. I do not, however, like most forms of comedy.
LOOKING FOR: it's been a while since I've made some new online friends, so I'm just trying to poke my head out and see if there's anyone I might get along with. I think my ideal new friend would share general interests with me and not necessarily fandoms, but if you happen to be into one of my ancient (ha) animanga interests, I would be so glad to nerd out with you. in general, I like to talk to people who also have a field of study they're passionate about/talk about (I love learning things, period) or who like to share their daily life and introspections. even if I don't comment all the time, I just love gleaning how people live and what their experiences are like. if you have cats, that's also a huge plus.
ANYTHING ELSE?: located currently in the NE US, but I go back and forth between here and NE/SE Germany. also, I am a gay woman/lesbian/use the word queer sometimes, so that comes up every once in a while. I also have some low-grade chronic health issues that come up (namely migraine and some other stuff).
ALSO KNOWN AS: millefiore @ twitter; future.pasts @ instagram. I also use plurk. I tend to use all of these more than my journal, to be honest, but (like many of us), I do hope to get more into writing here with some consistency.
nice to maybe meet you!

hast du mal deutsch gelernt/studiert, wenn ich fragen darf?

Having said all that, I don't think my journal is quite what you're looking for because I rarely talk about my day-to-day life. It's all about the fandoms for me. XD The fandoms being a mix of manga and video games as far as what's actually being written about at the moment.
I hope you have luck finding more people on Dreamwidth! ^^

if you don't mind, I think I'd like to add you! even if we write about different things, it's nice to know we share some similarities. maybe I'll even learn something about a series I might not have considered. :-)

Feel free to add if my journal looks interesting, I don't do private posts. :)

I think I will follow, if you don't mind. not sure that you'll learn as much from my posts as it looks like I might from yours, so no pressure to subscribe back!

before I came to my current job, I taught english as a foreign language in Germany and very nearly went down the path to teaching english in Japan, too. my japanese is super elementary (I took a semester in my last term of undergrad just for fun, and then took a course at the community college where I lived in Germany), so it would have been a quite different experience from the one I had come to know. it's still something that's in my future plans; I think it would be meaningful for my understanding of effective pedagogy and cross-cultural connection for me to teach without having my students' first language to negotiate meaning. I hope to maybe do an EdD in language, literacy, and cultures down the line, so that's also why I think it'd be an enriching personal experience.
what brought you to your languages, if I may ask? and if I remember correctly from my friends who've taught in Japan/who are from Japan, it's between school years now, right?

I know barely any Japanese right now, I'm hoping the full immersion will help me pick it up quicker than I otherwise would. I took a Japanese evening class a long time ago, but that's the most experience I've had with the language so far. I'm currently learning Danish as my late grandmother was Danish and I wanted to learn and reconnect with that, plus I like Danish movies and it feels great getting to points where I'm relying less on subtitles! I've only just moved over to Japan a little over a week ago so I'm in limbo at the moment. Schools are due to open at the beginning of April, but it's a bit up in the air with the virus and no one really knows what's happening right now.

I'd love to hear more about what you teach! I teach 6-8, so I'm curious about what younger kids do in tech/compsci these days. when you say you do teacher workshops at the art museum, do you mean you do professional development/training, or you teach there too?
one of my closest colleagues at my school teaches 6th grade innovative design, which combines technology/compsci with art/humanities, so that's why I ask!

It varies from grade level to grade level. I teach a range of things, from fine motor skills involving a mouse, to touch typing, how to use Microsoft and Google Apps, digital citizenship, and with my older students, programming/coding and web design. Sometimes I'm relegated to supporting the common core teachers by simply giving the students a space to work on their research papers and projects, or teaching them how to access and navigate a new website that they'll be using, for example, in their science class to save that teacher some instructional time. We're on an 8 Day rotation schedule between my class, music, art, and the library with gym class sandwiched in between (ex: computer > gym > art > gym > music > gym > library > gym), so I see classes about once every two weeks. It's not ideal and I miss when we were on a 6 Day rotation schedule, but I try and maximize my time and do what I can!
And yes, I do most of my professional development there! I've taught one workshop for them and assisted on several others, but mainly I'm an attendee of the workshops and not the one presenting them. I do them mostly for fun and because I enjoy the enthusiasm of their education department. The credit hours are just a fun bonus.
