What's up party people?

If you've made it this far you've probably gathered that my name is Brandyn, and yeah I'm testing the waters here. I'm used to social media but never did anything live journal related and definitely don't entirely fit in with capital F Fandom spaces (Though all respect to the queer men, gals, and non-binary pals that spend their time in the trenches and help elevate certain fandoms, I like Star Trek and Gundam, I respect my history).

Mostly want to use this space to post a bit...vulnerably? Not necessarily in terms of my personal life or a place to vent necessarily (Though that's not off the table), but a space removed from the more performative persona I've put on for some other sites (Namely LeagueOfComicGeeks, cause big comic fan. Can find me under fatboyftw there). Not that I'm bitching, I love being known as a snarky but insightful asshole but it can take work to maintain. Alongside the inherent cynicism that having a space only dedicated to one niche hobby inherently brings since once you reach a certain threshold of something and learn how the sausage gets made you tend to get more bitter and critical. I love shouting into the ether about stuff but traditional social media has a way of getting me a bit heated sometimes, lmao.

So I'm going to use this space to be chill and just mainly talk about things I enjoy, comics and otherwise. A place I can go when I wanna post something that on another site I might have to defend or explain a bit more than I have the mental energy to do. As for what I would be posting about well, as we've established comics. Comics of all kinds, love the entire medium, not just superhero stuff. But also the occasional manga/anime, Kaiju Films, video games, and chats about fiction writing since it's not something I do nearly enough but something I love to do.

Ohhhh, hell yeah. Since my Gwenpool pfp was what clinched it I gotta ask if you're a true blue comic reader or if you mostly know Gwenpool from her larger fandom presence and such (Either is 100% fine, this is not me gatekeeping I just gotta know how down in the weeds of my comic fandom I can and should be with you as to not scare you off lmao).

It's aight, I get it—though to be truthful, Unbelievable Gwenpool is one of the fairly few comic runs I have indeed read firsthand, as opposed to piecing together impressions through (video) essays and general discussion/discourse; by that same token, though, I haven't paid much mind to the rest of her appearances given all the contention I've caught wind of around them (not that I refuse to read them as such; I'm just not in a hurry to).

All that being said, there's a solid case for it being my favorite comic until further notice—I went into it expecting some mildly witty metafictional dramedy (as I'd heard), and finished it feeling like my soul had been swaddled and spoken to; ever since, Gwen's been a character I have an affection for like few others (Gurihiru's renderings definitely helping there, I'll admit)…

It really is shocking how well The Unbelievable Gwenpool is able to give a gut punch and a warm hug all at once. You really summed up my own thoughts on the book, forever one of my favorites even as someone who's read thousands of comics...6,373 issues to be specific, least what I've remembered to log.

I'll never tell someone outright not to read something but realistically the only Gwenpool book imo that holds a candle to the original is the Marvel Unlimited digital comic called Love Unlimited. She has an arc in that and it explores her sexuality (Or, spoilers, her lack there of, it's pretty damn good Ace Rep). Gwenpool Strikes Back is a frustrating comic that knows that it's frustrating and turns it around at the very end but doesn't make the first three issues any more pleasant to read and the newest series is...woof.

Mmyep, all that matches up with what I’ve generally heard—aside from Strikes Back’s turning around, which now does pique my interest in it…but only a little bit. Noted, in any case!

Damn, that’s a much higher place of praise than I can offer—though I have a hunch I’d still feel the same in your position. (As it stands now, I feel like I’ve done it a disservice for not putting out a post on it back in September…)
