Name: Jade
Age: 27
Country: Canada
Subscription/Access Policy: 99% open - the very few things I restrict are pretty personal
Main Fandoms: Stargate: Atlantis, Stargate: SG1, Supernatural, Avengers/Thor (Those are the ones I write for - and I know they are pretty big fandoms)
Other Fandoms: Heroes, The Big Bang Theory, Leverage, Firefly/Serenity, Angel: the Series, Buffy: The Vampire Slayer, Harry Potter, Symphony of the Ages (by Elizabeth Haydon), Anita Blake, Alice in Wonderland, Star Trek '09, Dark Angel, The Pretender, (probably a lot more.)
Fannish Interests: Writing fanfiction mostly, but discussion too.Currently I'm taking apart SGA to "fix" what the show didn't do right. I'm currently all over Loki/Sif from the Avengers/Thor fandom, but I still obsess love to dip my toes into my favourite fandoms (SGA, SPN, etc)
OTPs and Ships: I don't really OTP. I have my preferred pairings (i.e. Harry/Hermione, Spock/Uhura, Loki/Sif), but I also "little black dress" a lot in my fandoms. In SGA I ship John Sheppard (often with Rodney, sometimes with Lorne, and lately a lot with Teyla). More to give you an idea.
Favourite Movies: I don't really have a favourite movie. I usually get dragged to go to the theaters. Though I did really enjoy The Hunger Games, Alice in Wonderland, The Lucky One, The Vow. I rewatch Memories of a Geisha, Avatar, Star Trek '09 and The Pretender movies fairly often.
TV Shows: I don't watch a lot of TV. But Stargate Atlantis, Stargate SG1, Terra Nova (when it was on), Continuum (now that it's playing), Supernatural, BBC Sherlock.
Books: A highly eclectic mix - Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter novels (Laurell K. Hamilton), Symphony of the Ages (Elizabeth Haydon), Harry Potter, The Hunger Games (trilogy), King Killer Chronicles (Patrick Rothfuss), Bridge to Terabithia, Women of the Other World series (Kelley Armstrong), Darkest Powers trilogy (Kelley Armstrong), Darkness Rising series (Kelley Armstrong), and so many more..... I was an English major in school I have more books than I can safely shake a lighter at without burning down my house.
Music: Another highly eclectic mix. Linkin Park, Nickelback, Mumford & Sons, City & Colour, Muse, Pink Floyd, AC/DC, KISS, James Durbin, Great Big Sea, Christian Kane, Evanescence, Queen, Savage Garden, The Beatles, Sammy Haggar, Eric Clapton, (I'll listen to pretty much anything honestly).
Games: Fable 3
Comics/Anime/Misc: Johnny the Homicidal Maniac

Date: 2013-02-05 03:50 pm (UTC)I think livejournal tried to merge the two a bit, or become more like tumblr rather than stay the way they were, which is a big reason (of the many) why I'm moving over here now. It just didn't work the way they were trying it. I think if you wanted the best of both worlds, you'd have to start a whole new site. But in all honesty, it feels like fewer and fewer people even want to express their fandom opinions verbally these days. Most people I know would rather go to tumblr and reblog a pretty graphic instead of writing down in actual words what they thought of [insert item here]. :/

Date: 2013-02-05 05:14 pm (UTC)I think the way fandom is choosing to express themselves is changing and evolving with our social outlets. Micro-blogging is becoming the norm and reaction gifs are taking the place of commentary. And I miss the days of carefully thought-out and well crafted essays on [insert discussion point here. For that reason I will never give up my DW account :) Because there is always the chance that one day fandom will move back into using lengthy discussion posts and I want to have a homebase when that day comes.
But it's been a while since I've done anything with livejournal. I had no idea that they were trying to become more "tumblr" like in their set up.

Date: 2013-02-08 11:46 pm (UTC)You don't have to hunt down a bunch of communities - just type in a tag and scroll to your heart's content.
I've never really thought about that! The few times I scrolled through a few tags, it was mostly spam-like content (like people talking about random stuff and just marginally mentioning the tagged whatever-it-was, or memes tagged with every little thing, my god). But if you're willing to weed through that, it sounds like it might be a better system than DW/LJ.
I'm okay with that evolution, even if I find it sad. I mean, language is such a beautiful thing, why not use that to express our feelings about fandom rather than gifs? And micro-blogging is also okay, but it needs to be done 'right', for lack of a better term. I've had conversations on twitter that spanned five, six, seven tweets easily just to express one idea. Because 160 characters are too short for most things. Being able to express yourself in so few characters is, well, an art in itself, and not many people have mastered that. And I realise that that's an ongoing development, but until I personally am happier with how things are done on twitter, I will be nostalgic for the well crafted essays you mentioned.
I believe livejournal introduced 'like' buttons to be more facebook- and tumblr-like, and you can now repost / reblog (public?) entries people make to your own journal. Or so I hear; I've only ever seen it with my own eyes once (which is super weird, suddenly having an entry written by a total stranger on your flist, especially since LJ doesn't seem to be able to incorporate a way of telling you why the entry is there, like who reposted it and for what reason). Most people I've spoken to were vehemently opposed to the idea, so it never really caught on, at least not on my flist. Fortunately.
