Hallo! We share interests in Sherlock and Hikaru no Go (although I've been pretty much out of Japanese fandoms for ages and haven't really been around the latter recently) and BL, plus I like a number of your films/shows and I approve of all the books you listed. Given your like of BL, have you read any M/M fiction? A lot of the genre is crap (oh my god there is so much crap) but some of it is quite excellent! And even the crap can, at times, be entertaining. :'D

I have read some! "Almost Like Being in Love" by Steve Kluger I think is my favorite out of actual gay fiction. (The Nightrunner series is my favorite if we're just counting fiction with gay main characters.) I've read a few others, but can't remember the titles off the top of my head. Some of it, especially the "by men, for men" gay smut, is a little...not to my taste.

Funnily enough, my partner's dad knows a lady who wrote a couple gay male fiction novels; one was an exploration of being religious and gay, and the other was...weirdly racist :|a It was awkward.

Oooh, that has amazing reviews on Goodreads. Just requested it from my library, can't wait to get started on it. :3 I mostly agree about the smut, but then I find most erotica to be pretty boring, regardless of who wrote it or whom it's aimed at. I've got nothing against it, it's just that usually there's no meat to the characters or the setting or anything and it's just, eh. Can't really be bothered with it. Which is not quite the kind of reaction it's supposed to inspire in its readers.

Ugh, that is awkward. Racist how? Was it pretty blatant, or was it more the kind of subtle racism you find in people who don't want to be racist but can't quite shake the indoctrination they grew up with? I encounter the latter a lot more often, and in a lot of ways I think it's even worse because so much of the time it worms its way into people's heads and no-one even notices it exists. You can't fight what you don't see.

I have to be in the right mood for contextless smut. My biggest issue with m/m smut at this point is it tends to be unimaginative. It's almost always anal, and as much as I am a fan, there are so many other ways to have sex! I mean, I think the proliferation of Tab-A-Into-Slot-B sex is a problem no matter what sort of bits you're dealing with, but it's just gotten to the point where I'm having more fun writing smut myself :P

It was a positive racism getting into fetishism. Every time this Indian guy was mentioned, there was a lot of focus on his dark skin and whatnot. Every. Single. Time. It was just awkward and creepy.

Ohhhh yeah, definitely. It also bugs me to no end that so many authors don't count sex as "real" until there's anal (and/or vaginal, if we're talking about hetero sex) penetration involved. I'm sorry, but anything involving one or more sets of genitals counts as sex. Period. Penetration is not the be-all end-all of sex, it's not the golden standard you have to work your way up to. It does not imbue a relationship with any more meaning or depth by virtue of completing that act than that relationship had previously.

That is creepy. And probably also unconsciously done. Gross. :|
