Date: 2021-02-23 10:32 am (UTC)Oh my goodness, I wish I could rec you something. I've requested Mina/Val Helsing several times for Yuletide, and I got really close once during another fest with someone telling me they'd write me something, but nothing's ever materialised. *cries*
I guess we'll both have to keep checking AO3 and hope for the best... or just write our own? :)

Date: 2021-02-24 07:57 am (UTC)I give Stoker such a hard time for being a hack, but this is such a beautiful line. I feel like it's there in adaptations in places - I mean, I know Bram Stoker's Dracula is just horny across the board, but I distinctly remember Mina coming onto Van Helsing when under the influence - so there must be someone somewhere who has properly put pen to paper and brought this to life.
Ah! Now you've put this idea in my head, I'm quietly fixated with it!

Date: 2021-02-24 09:20 am (UTC)You'd really think there would have to be fanfic for this. It's definitely there in Bram Stoker's Dracula but, as you say, horny across the board. I love the BBC adaption from the 1970s, Count Dracula. Not only does it have my favourite Mina and my favourite Van Helsing ever in it, but there's a sense of gentle, mutual admiration there that's really the reason I'm all over this idea. Btw, someone kindly put it up on YT, if you're interested. ;)

Date: 2021-02-24 01:15 pm (UTC)Oh, I remember this gem! I haven't seen this in ages - since, well, since I used to sneak downstairs to watch horror movies on TV after my parents had gone to bed, hahah. Thank you so much for this welcome reminder!
I have a little project for an indie press about different incarnations of Dracula that I'm going to begin at some point after I clear my schedule, and I'm thinking I should try and sneak some of this Mina/Van Helsing business into it now if only because it's such a charming idea. Ugh! Enough of my endless work schedule though, we should embark on some sort of Mina/Van Helsing awareness campaign, lol.

Date: 2021-02-26 09:44 am (UTC)OH! OH! I'm keeping an eye on this! I think this comm might be the only fic community I haven't yet enrolled in. (<_<)
(sidenote: thank you for going back and forth with me about this! I'd had a horrible week but talking about this has really brightened my days!)

Date: 2021-02-27 05:05 am (UTC)Hurt/comfort is definitely one of my favourite tropes, because I'm a softie.
I've been having a horrible time lately too, and last week in particular has been very stressful, so this works out well for both of us. Talking about fanfic, even in the abstract, is always cheering. :)

Date: 2021-02-27 02:32 pm (UTC)Absolutely a softie here too, haha.
Agreed so much! It's just so nice to have something that can act as a method of escapism, and double as a method of addressing that which concerns you!

Date: 2021-03-01 08:49 pm (UTC)Now that I think about it, the dynamic bears similarities to Mina/Van Helsing. Hmm. lol

Date: 2021-03-01 09:51 pm (UTC)Gosh, it had been a very long time since I thought of Upstairs, Downstairs! I remember it seeing it when I was younger, but as with things like the American drama, The Waltons, I was simply aware of it and didn't fully understand the weight of the kind of stories the show was trying to tell. I think I'd have to look more into this to truly comment!
It's somewhat unpopular nowadays, but I have always been very fond of girls school fiction, and general stories for girls like the Chalet School books, so, ah, i kind of have a fondness for romantic relationships involving younger girls and older male mentor figures even though it's 2021 this is problematic, it depicts an imbalance of power &c. &c. and I absolutely acknowledge that, but it doesn't stop me from wanting to read it in fiction.

Date: 2021-03-03 10:31 pm (UTC)I know what you mean about the mentor/protegé dynamic. It's a favourite of mine too. Luckily, I don't pay much attention to what's considered problematic. (Or I'd have to give up on a lot of my favourite pairings. lol) I never write non-con, so things like an imbalance of power and such are something I only ever use as, well, a kink basically, never an excuse to be creepy. :)

Date: 2021-03-08 06:32 pm (UTC)Oh, I am with you completely, that sort of stuff seeps in completely! Seeing stuff like this when young really muddies the water, gives you this strange notalgia by proxy for a time you never lived in.
I've never been a fan of non-con either so we're on the same ground here... ah, although I think I just weird stuff, if I am entirely about an evaluation of what I do.

Date: 2021-02-23 05:46 pm (UTC)Oooh, you like Star Trek TNG and slash? That's two huge things we have in common! (And I'm 30+ as well.) If you want we can be friends?
no subject
Date: 2021-02-24 05:08 am (UTC)So I should admit, that's all the TNG I've written, except for a VOY crossover with Barclay that I'm not sure is actually online atm, but I'd be happy to be friends. :)
no subject
Date: 2021-02-24 01:58 pm (UTC)Oh that's fine, I'm used to TNG having only a tiny slash fandom compared to some of the other series! I'm always happy to make friends who just like the genre of slash! Will add you ASAP!

Date: 2021-02-26 09:40 am (UTC)Btw, if you love hurt/comfort, one of my friends just recced me a fandom exchange. Nominations close... today, I think it might be by now?
no subject
Date: 2021-02-26 06:03 pm (UTC)I do like hurt/comfort, it's one of my favorite things to write. But, unfortunately, I can't write just like that. I have to be in the mood, and that one sometimes doesn't happen for YEARS. My creativity is extremely elusive.

Date: 2021-02-27 02:52 pm (UTC)They sure can... but I've retired from fic writing for now anyway so it's not that bad that the muse is absent. But maybe I'll return one day, and then I'll have to wait for her all over again. ;)
