Hurt/comfort is definitely one of my favourite tropes, because I'm a softie.

I've been having a horrible time lately too, and last week in particular has been very stressful, so this works out well for both of us. Talking about fanfic, even in the abstract, is always cheering. :)

Agreed so much! It's just so nice to have something that can act as a method of escapism, and double as a method of addressing that which concerns you!

Yup! I've always been of the opinion that fanfic is the very best kind of escapism and therapy. And, as a bonus, that goes for the writer and the reader. :)

I've been thinking... there is another het pairing I like, and you might even know of that one too, since you're familiar with 1970s British TV. :) I'm planning to start a re-watch of Upstairs, Downstairs next weekend, and I think I've been mentally shipping Richard Bellamy/Hazel Forrest since I saw it for the first time. I've requested this pairing a few times in fic exchanges too; never had any luck, but there's at least one fic on AO3.
Now that I think about it, the dynamic bears similarities to Mina/Van Helsing. Hmm. lol

Gosh, it had been a very long time since I thought of Upstairs, Downstairs! I remember it seeing it when I was younger, but as with things like the American drama, The Waltons, I was simply aware of it and didn't fully understand the weight of the kind of stories the show was trying to tell. I think I'd have to look more into this to truly comment!

It's somewhat unpopular nowadays, but I have always been very fond of girls school fiction, and general stories for girls like the Chalet School books, so, ah, i kind of have a fondness for romantic relationships involving younger girls and older male mentor figures even though it's 2021 this is problematic, it depicts an imbalance of power &c. &c. and I absolutely acknowledge that, but it doesn't stop me from wanting to read it in fiction.

I'm such a history buff, and always have been, so Upstairs, Downstairs has been a favourite since I first saw it. The beauty of seeing something like that when you're quite young is that with every consecutive viewing, you "get it" a little more. :)
I know what you mean about the mentor/protegé dynamic. It's a favourite of mine too. Luckily, I don't pay much attention to what's considered problematic. (Or I'd have to give up on a lot of my favourite pairings. lol) I never write non-con, so things like an imbalance of power and such are something I only ever use as, well, a kink basically, never an excuse to be creepy. :)

Oh, I am with you completely, that sort of stuff seeps in completely! Seeing stuff like this when young really muddies the water, gives you this strange notalgia by proxy for a time you never lived in.

I've never been a fan of non-con either so we're on the same ground here... ah, although I think I just weird stuff, if I am entirely about an evaluation of what I do.
